2018-The Summer Of Sega

If blue hedgehogs, blast processing and the iconic “SEGA!” scream from years past mean anything to you, the summer of 2018 might just hurt your wallet a little more than you were expecting.

Recently, SEGA announced that it would be rolling out another classics compilation for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. It’s set to release on May 29, both physically and digitally. Although many of the same games from the Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection (PS3/Xbox 360) are present, new additions include both ToeJam and Earl games as well as a number of games from the Wonder Boy franchise. The full list of games can be found here. Aside from trophy support (which is to be expected from any modern video game release), there will be leaderboards, online multiplayer, mirror modes, and a rewind feature- all of which weren’t present in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection.

Speaking of Wonder Boy, FDG Entertainment’s Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom is set to release sometime this summer (no exact date has been given). It seems to be heavily inspired by The Dragon’s Trap (which is by no means a bad thing- I’m already itching to replay last year’s remake despite having obtained all the trophies a few months ago) and has had input from the creator of the Wonder Boy in Monster World series.

It was announced today that last year’s Sonic Mania will be getting a physical release across all platforms in the form of Sonic Mania Plus, which includes two characters from the Sonic universe that have not been seen in any Sonic title since the 90’s- Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. Remixed zones also seem to be a part of the plan as well as a 4 player competition mode. If you’re not looking to double dip, you’ll also be able to get the Plus content as a free update. We’ll also be getting a small animated series called Sonic Mania Adventures, which the official Sonic Twitter page posted a clip of alongside the Plus announcement.

Last, but not least, Sonic the Hedgehog’s official Twitter page posted this vague clip today. Between this and a few months worth of speculation in the gaming community, I think it’s safe to say we’ll be getting another Sonic & Sega racing game.
